GlobalPetrolPrices has released its most recent ranking of countries using diesel, highlighting the African nations with the highest diesel prices for March 2025.
Zimbabwe continues to face high diesel costs, ranking among the top three most expensive in Africa, while South Africa, despite having one of the largest fuel distribution networks, sits in 14th place.
Zimbabwe is amongst African Countries with High diesel Price
In the Central African Republic (CAR), diesel prices have surged past $2 (R36.37) per litre, making it the third most expensive in the world. This spike is largely due to the nation’s heavy reliance on fuel imports and persistent logistical challenges.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s diesel price sits at $1.55 (R28.21) per litre, influenced by currency fluctuations, high import duties, and inflationary pressures. The country’s economy heavily depends on fuel imports, making it vulnerable to external shocks. The rising diesel costs are affecting businesses across sectors, particularly manufacturing, transport, and agriculture, where fuel is a major operational expense.
South Africa’s Diesel Prices in Comparison
South Africa, the continent’s second-largest economy, has a more diversified fuel supply, with local refineries complementing imports. However, its diesel price of $1.257 (R22.87) per litre places it at 14th among African nations with the most expensive diesel.
While relatively lower than Zimbabwe’s, South Africa’s diesel costs remain high due to global crude oil price trends, taxation, and logistical expenses.
Unlike Zimbabwe, South Africa benefits from a stronger currency and better fuel distribution infrastructure, helping to cushion fuel price fluctuations. However, both nations face the common challenge of rising operational costs, which could lead to increased consumer prices.
Diesel Price Trends Across Africa
According to GlobalPetrolPrices, which last updated its data on March 17, 2025, the global average diesel price remains at $1.20 (R21.82) per litre. Diesel prices in CAR, Seychelles, Cameroon, and Burundi have increased slightly since February, while prices in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Guinea, and Uganda have decreased. Sierra Leone’s diesel price has remained unchanged.
