How can ZEP holders secure a 5-year general work visa?

In November last year, South African Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber extended the validity of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEP) until 28 November 2025.

With the impending expiration of the ZEP, SA Migration International has outlined a streamlined process for ZEP holders to transition to a 5-year General Work Visa.

This transition comes with waivers and exemptions, ensuring a smoother application process.

Closing Date for ZEP Extension

ZEP permit holders who wish to extend their permits must submit their applications by 29 November 2025 through VFS Global. This deadline is crucial for those transitioning from the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP) to a General Work Visa.

In October 2024, South Africa introduced a points-based system for General Work Visa applications. However, ZEP holders are exempt from this system, making their transition process distinct.

Transition From ZEP to the General Work Visa

ZEP holders must apply for a General Work Visa under a specific checklist designed for them. The process involves several key steps:

  1. Job Offer: Secure a job offer from a South African employer.
  2. Employer Requirements: The employer must meet specific regulatory requirements.
  3. Gather Required Documents: Obtain all necessary supporting documents.
  4. Submit Application: Complete the application process online via the VFS Global website.
  5. Pay DHA Fee: Settle the required fees with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
  6. Wait for Evaluation: The DHA will review the application and verify all submitted documents.

Waivers for Qualifications and Professional Body Registration

ZEP holders may be eligible for waivers or exemptions from specific requirements, including:

  • SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) evaluation of qualifications.
  • Formal qualification requirements for specific job positions.
  • Labour market testing requirements, which are typically needed for General Work Visa applicants.

Points Allocation for ZEP Holders

SA Migration International explains that, unlike other applicants under the new General Work Visa system, authorities will assess ZEP holders without using the points-based system. In addition, ZEP holders may benefit from priority processing due to their unique circumstances. A simplified and facilitated application process has also been designed to ensure a smoother transition for ZEP holders.

Expected Timeline

Processing times for the General Work Visa typically range from 6 to 12 months, depending on individual cases and the volume of applications received.

Key role players in the process include VFS Global, which handles the submission and initial processing of applications. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is responsible for evaluating and approving applications.
