Many of us are holding out for the break that the December holidays bring, but it’s still important to prioritise your safety.

There are a number of important factors to consider when visiting a holiday destination. These include booking secure accommodation and knowing which beaches are best for swimming, memorising where your nearest hospital and vet are located, and saving all of the emergency numbers you might need.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy a safe festive holiday!

Check that your accommodation is safe

Before booking a holiday home or holiday accommodation, look online for reviews to check if any notable issues around security are mentioned. When you arrive at your holiday accommodation, prioritise security checks. It’s worth doing a thorough inspection of all locks, gates, and security systems.

It’s also worth getting into a ‘security routine.’ Keep doors locked even when you’re home. Windows need special attention, too. Close and lock them when leaving, even for brief periods. A quality safe is always great for storing valuables, and never leave spare keys in conventional hiding spots.

Know your emergency contact numbers

Save these national emergency numbers into your phone:

  • Police (10111)
  • Ambulance (10177)
  • Fire Department (998)

If you aren’t able to receive immediate assistance after calling national lines, apps like Namola are useful to have downloaded and saved to your phone. Ensure that you sign up in order to get immediate assistance.

Along with emergency numbers, it is important to have your medical aid’s emergency line as well as the nearest police station’s direct line saved to your phone for non-emergency situations.

Know where the nearest medical facilities are

As important as saving all emergency numbers, it is worth memorising the locations of essential medical facilities nearby. Track down to the nearest hospital, know where the nearest 24-hour pharmacy is, and find the closest veterinary clinic if travelling with pets.

Store photos of important medical documents on your phone in case you might need them.

Check your vehicle ahead of the holiday

If you’re driving to your holiday destination, your car requires prep, too. It is worth taking your vehicle in for a service check before departure to check the tyres and brakes. Keep road safety at the top of your mind by packing car supplies including jumper cables, a torch, and basic tools. Plan your travel schedule to avoid night driving when possible and do not drive long distances during festive holidays – for example, on Christmas or New Year’s.

Beach and swimming safety

Swimming safety begins with your location. If you or a family member plans on a sea swim, you should only opt for beaches with active lifeguard stations and clear signage. Take time to check the weather forecast and tide tables before heading out. Learning to identify rip currents is crucial.

The buddy system is important, too – never venture into the water alone, regardless of how good a swimmer you may be. Dawn and dusk pose additional risks, so stick to daylight hours for ocean swimming. When supervising kids, keep them within arm’s reach at all times.
