The Department of Energy brought big smiles to the faces of South African motorists on Tuesday when they confirmed decreases in both the petrol and diesel prices for April.

This is the second month where prices are set to drop after four consecutive months of increases.

The Department of Energy announced different prices decreases for Inland and Coastal regions.

The changes will take effect from midnight on Tuesday, 1 April.

Fuel prices were adjusted as follows:

Petrol 93 decrease of 58 cents decrease of 62 cents
Petrol 95 decrease of 72 cents decrease of 76 cents
Diesel 0.05% decrease of 84 cents decrease of 88 cents
Diesel 0.005% decrease of 86 cents decrease of 90 cents
Illuminating Paraffin decrease of 82 cents decrease of 84 cents

The prices used for this exercise are coastal prices.

Below, a look at how much it will cost in April to fill up the three of the best-selling cars in Mzansi (at the coast):

Volkswagen Polo Vivo  45 litre: R935.55 for 95 unleaded

Toyota Urban Cruiser – 48 litre: R997.92 for 95 unleaded

Toyota Hilux 80 litre: R1 479.20 for 0.05% diesel and R1 663.20 for 95 unleaded petrol

FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS:

1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices

2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products


Oil price

At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $74.76 a barrel.

Exchange rate

At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R18.38/$.
