The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned about heavy rains and potential flooding from Sunday, 5 January, to Wednesday, 8 January. Provinces including North West, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and southern Mpumalanga are expected to experience scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.
Heavy rain expected
Rainfall amounts could reach 50 to 70 mm, leading to road flooding, flash floods, and slippery surfaces.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution during this period.
“Motorists should ensure clear windscreens, as traffic and road markings could be difficult to see during heavy rain, even for vehicles with properly working wipers,” advised SAWS.
Pedestrians and drivers must also avoid flooded low-water bridges, as strong currents may sweep away vehicles, endangering lives and property.
Tropical moisture to sustain continuous showers
Unlike typical summer storms in the afternoon, this rain event stems from warm, moist tropical air. As a result, heavy showers are likely at any time, even during nighttime hours, increasing risks on the roads. The Road Traffic Management Centre (RTMC) has highlighted the critical danger posed by driving between 18:00 and 1:00.
“For this festive season, a higher number of road fatalities than previous years has already been reported,” stated SAWS.
Localised flooding and disruptions will likely persist into Monday and beyond, affecting much of the central and eastern regions. Residents in Gauteng, Limpopo’s western Bushveld, and parts of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal should prepare for extended rainfall through Wednesday.
SAWS and RTMC urge preparedness
Both SAWS and RTMC emphasise the need for preparedness and responsible behaviour during this period of adverse weather. They advise road users to check forecasts regularly and plan travel carefully.
With heavy rains disrupting daily routines, how can South Africans better prepare to stay safe and reduce risks during such weather extremes?
