Numerous areas in Hammanskraal have been left without drinking water after warnings to residents to not consume water until told that it’s safe to do so.

The Hammanskraal water crisis continues as many homes have been left destitute and unable to access clean and safe water.Leaders in the City of Tshwane have communicated that most homes in Hammanskraal will have to wait until 2025 for safe water to be supplied. These are the areas that will be getting safe water by end of December 2024.

HAMMANSKRAAL WATER CRISIS

Hammanskraal has been having a water crisis for years. Recently, authorities in the Tshwane province have warned residents not to drink tap water as it is unsafe. An update has shown that only some of the areas will have access to safe water by this year.

According to a statement issued by the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Nasiphi Moya, there has been progress, but water is still not safe to drink. Moya explained:

“The City of Tshwane has completed testing of the water in the reticulation network and the tests indicate that the flushing has been successful. However, some minor turbidity is still present and the water is not yet safe to drink. It will only be safe to drink when the City issues a formal notice that it is safe to drink, which is expected soon.

“The first of the four modules of the package plant was delayed due to unforeseen hard rock ground conditions, but was completed in October 2024. It will supply 12.5 megalitres of potable water into City of Tshwane’s reticulation network in Hammanskraal.”

HAMMANSKRAAL AREAS EXPECTED TO GET SAFE WATER BY DECEMBER

The statement further listed the areas that will have clean running water by the end of December. Here is the list of areas set to receive water soon, which are in Ward 49, 73, 74 and 75.

  • Mandela Village
  • Marokolong
  • Ramotse
  • Kekana Gardens (Steve Bikoville)
  • Kudube Unit 9
  • Babelegi Industrial
  • Bridgeview Informal Settlement

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER AREAS?

Other areas in Hammanskraal will be receiving water from tankers. They are expected to get safe running water after the rest of the modules are completed. This is expected to be by 2025. Moya said:

“The remaining modules are due to be completed in March 2025, April 2025 and June 2025 respectively. Once the other modules have been completed, all areas of Hammanskraal will then be supplied with piped water from the package plant.

“In the meantime, the other areas of Hammanskraal will continue to receive clean drinking water through water tankering. This water that is supplied through water tankers is obtained from other Rand Water and Magalies Water pipelines, is regularly tested, and is safe to drink.”
