Shayhieda Dollie, a 49-year-old mother from Gelvandale, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, stands accused of orchestrating the murder of her 22-year-old son, Moegamat Thaafir Dollie, for a R2-million life insurance pay-out.

This alleged crime took place in October 2024, and Dollie appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court last Friday to face charges of murder and conspiracy.

Struggling

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the murder occurred on 28 October2024. Dollie, unemployed, had reportedly been struggling to manage her son’s drug addiction, which had created tension in their home.

NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed that Dollie allegedly conspired with two individuals, “Shaun” and “Oompie,” to carry out the crime. The initial payment to these hitmen from Johannesburg was R80,000, which later increased to R380,000 due to delays in execution.

Events Leading to the Alleged Murder

Reports state that Dollie deceived her son into thinking he was attending a job interview, arranging for the perpetrators to collect him. It was during this encounter that Moegamat was reportedly killed.

Tyali added that Dollie allegedly considered various methods before deciding on the fatal plan, advised by multiple individuals who reportedly suggested a “permanent solution.”

Financial Motive and Insurance Scheme

The alleged motive for the crime was a R2-million insurance policy that Dollie planned to collect after her son’s death. Prosecutors argue that the funds were intended to pay the hired hitmen.

Given the severity of the charges, the state has opposed Dollie’s bail request. The case has been postponed to November 15 for profile verification, ensuring that all involved parties are thoroughly investigated.

This case has raised concerns, as it follows a disturbing trend of insurance-related murders. Recently, a Limpopo police officer was arrested for allegedly killing six people and collecting over R10 million in life insurance payouts.

Authorities are now investigating similar cases, highlighting an alarming pattern of financial exploitation through violence.

Public Reaction and Future Proceedings

The community in Gelvandale has reacted with shock and outrage, as this case points to both family betrayal and the calculated manipulation of life insurance policies.

Dollie’s upcoming court appearance on 15 November is anticipated as legal professionals and the public seek justice. Further developments in this case will determine the full extent of the consequences for Dollie and any co-conspirators involved.
