The Springboks are aiming for the three-peat and they will do so without some big names.

Rassie Erasmus and the Springboks are striving to make history as the first side to win three Rugby World Cup trophies in a row.

However, some of the current crop of players are unlikely to feature in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

SPRINGBOKS ENTERING THE LATTER STAGES OF THEIR CAREERS

  • Trevor Nyakane (35)
  • Franco Mostert (34) – November
  • Deon Fourie (38)
  • Cobus Reinach (34)
  • Faf de Klerk (33)
  • Damien de Allende (33)
  • Makazole Mapimpi (34)
  • Wille Le Roux (35)

Historically, players tend to retire internationally between the ages of 34-36. Moreover, in more rare circumstances players hang up their boots at 37 or 38.

So, the above Springboks will all be 34 or older come the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Meaning, Nyakane, Fourie, Mapimpi and Le Roux are all unlikely to feature at the next Rugby World Cup.

Ultimately, we will likely see them return for the Boks over the next couple of years.

BACKS HEADING FOR THE BACK END

Meanwhile, Reinach will also be 37 so he is unlikely to make it to the next showpiece. Likewise, Mostert will also be 37 and is therefore also unlikely to be in Rassie’s 2027 RWC squad.

Finally, Faf and de Allende will both be turning 36 that year.

Meaning, both players are entering the latter stages of their playing careers.
