Renowned German football executive and former manager Jurgen Klopp recently shared the story of how he crossed paths with Springboks captain Siya Kolisi.
The memorable encounter unfolded during a visit to Cape Town.
In a recent Instagram interview, Klopp recalled dining with friends at a restaurant in Camps Bay when Kolisi was spotted nearby.
“We were at a restaurant in Cape Town, Camps Bay. I was there with friends, and as a German, rugby isn’t a big sport for us,” Klopp explained.
“My friend, who’s half French and half English, returned from the restroom saying, ‘My God, Siya Kolisi is here.’ So, I walked over to have a look.”
To Klopp’s surprise, Kolisi recognized him and revealed himself to be a Liverpool supporter, sparking a conversation between the two.
The former All Blacks fan also admitted that his allegiance has shifted: “I didn’t know Siya Kolisi was a Liverpool supporter. And now, I’m a Springboks fan.”
It’s a meeting of champions that bridges the worlds of football and rugby, united by mutual admiration.
