South African legendary Kwaito star Victor Bogopane, popularly known as Doc Shebeleza, reportedly passed away in hospital on Thursday 9 January. Here’s five things to know about the icon.
DOC SHEBELEZA PASSES AWAY
Doc Shebeleza’s manager, Shakes Mavundla confirmed that he passed away on Thursday 9 January. He was 51 years old at the time of his death.
“Doc Shebeleza passed away on Thursday morning around 10:30am after being discharged from hospital on Monday,” said Mavundla according to Sunday World.
The legendary Kwaito star was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Johannesburg private hospital. He underwent surgery in December, which was a success. Two weeks after the operation, he told Times Live, that he was feeling better, but asked for to be kept in fans prayers.
“I’m feeling much better abuti [my brother] and I’m well. Looking forward to the operation, everyone around me is happy with my progress,” he said to the publication.
The icon was also hospitalised in June 2024 after a health scared.

- The icon shot to fame with his debut album titled S’Kumfete in 1996.
- Doc Shebeleza also released three more albums: Tiger (1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).
- He founded Amaskumfete, an all-male group in the 1990s.
- In recent years, the icon dedicated himself to philanthropy through Amaha, his organisation to uplift fellow artists.
