FIVE Durban tidal pools to chill in on New Year’s Day

Durban’s tidal pools are a highlight of its scenic coastline, offering safe, family-friendly spots to swim and enjoy the ocean.

The pools are sheltered from the strong waves, making them ideal for children, inexperienced swimmers, and anyone seeking a calm, refreshing dip.

Here are five tidal pools in and around Durban:

BRIGHTON BEACH POOL

Located in the Bluff area, Brighton Beach features a tidal pool ideal for families. The surrounding rock pools are perfect for exploration during low tide, offering a chance to observe marine life up close.

UMDLOTI TIDAL POOL

North of Durban, Umdloti offers a natural tidal pool formed by rock formations. It’s a popular spot for families, especially with small children, due to its shallow and calm waters. However, swimmers should exercise caution during high tide or large swells, as strong rip currents can occur.

BALLITO TIDAL POOL

Further up the North Coast, the Ballito Tidal Pool is easily accessible via a convenient walkway. It features a larger pool for adults and a shallow section ideal for children. The area is rich in marine life, making it a delightful spot for snorkeling and exploration.

THOMPSON’S BAY

Also known as ‘Charlie’s Pool,’ this pool in Ballito is one of the largest in the area, approximately 90 metres long. It’s suitable for both swimming and snorkelling, with lifeguards on duty and facilities available for visitors. The pool is home to one of the southernmost coral colonies in Africa, offering a unique snorkelling experience.

PARK RYNIE

Further down the South Coast is the Park Rynie Tidal Pool which features a kid-friendly pool surrounded by rocks, offering beautiful views and opportunities for exploring.

A number of Durban beaches were closed recently due to high levels of E.coli, including Anstey’s Beach and its tidal pool.
