Kaizer Chiefs has had an average season despite bringing in a new coach and 10 new players.
In July, the club hired Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi on a three-year-deal. The 59-year-old came along with his technical team and meet up with the team in Turkey during their preseason training.
After winning two of his opening league games, Nabi was hailed for his influence and attacking style of play. His good start to the season was short-lived following a 4-0 hammering by Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup.
Since then, Kaizer Chiefs have failed to find consistency in the league and now lie eighth in the Betway Premiership.
Here’s some of the players who flopped for Amakhosi this season despite high expectations.
Njabulo Blom
The 25-year-old returned to Kaizer Chiefs onloan from MLS side St. Louis City SC. The utility player was looking for a permanent stay but it seems unlikely that Blom would be given a contract.
“He was expected to lead the team with his experience and understanding of the environment,” a source close to the club said as per FARPost “However, Blom has disappointed since his return from the MLS, struggling to knuckle down a starting place in coach Nabi’s team.”
Ranga Chivaviro
The strong striker started the season well scoring three times in the opening five games of the season. His poor run of form saw him demoted to the bench. He has missed a number of good chances this season which would have won games for Chiefs. At 32, it looks less likely that the club will keep him next season.
Bradley Cross
Having parted ways with Sifiso Hlanti, Chiefs went to Golden Arrows to buy a left-back. Despite a good start to his Amakhosi career, Cross has become a liability at the back in the past 10 or so games. Nabi has had to rely on the returning Edmilson Dove to cover at left-back instead of playing the ex-Arrows man.
Fiacre Ntwari
The former TS Galaxy didn’t come cheap. The 25-year-old Rwandan internation conceded more than 10 goals in five matches for Kaizer Chiefs since he got signed. He has since been demoted having failed to settle.
Yusuf Maart
Maart has not played a captain’s role this season. His place in the midfield is not secured and if it wasn’t for the armband, the Sekhukhune United man would have been relegated to the bench.
