First snow of the year falls in the Western Cape

Mountainous regions of the Western Cape were blanketed in a dazzling layer of snow this weekend marking the first snowfall of the year and transforming parts of the province into a picture-perfect winter scene.

The snowfall, which primarily fell between Oudtshoorn and De Rust, quickly became a social media sensation as locals shared images of snow-draped peaks and frosty landscapes.

The Matroosberg Reserve, a popular destination for snow chasers, posted several images showing snow settling across the region.

Icy beauty

Although the Western Cape is known for its mild winters, this early May snowfall took many by surprise, offering residents a rare and welcome glimpse of icy beauty.

Weather experts attribute the snow to shifting weather patterns, with the South African Weather Services recently forecasting overcast skies, isolated showers, and cooler temperatures.

Along the coast, strong winds – some reaching gale force – added to the wintery ambiance, making for a dramatic start to the colder season.
