Fans calling for Gayton to intervene as SABC remain mute

South African cricket fans are calling on Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie to make plans to ensure that SABC broadcasts the T20 final involving the Proteas Women.

The T20 World Cup final between the South African Women’s team and the New Zealand Women’s team is scheduled for Sunday, 20 October at 16:00. Up to now, all the World Cup matches have been exclusively shown on SuperSport. However, fans are now urging the sports minister to get involved.

In June, the South African men’s team competed in the T20 World Cup and made it to the final. The SABC and SuperSport agreed to broadcast the semi-final and final matches that featured South Africa.

Fans call on Gayton to make a plan ahead of Proteas Women T20 final

In August, Gayton pledged to bring the first of the two test matches between the Springboks and All Blacks to every South African household. A week later, the match was aired on SABC.

This weekend, McKenzie is faced with another similar situation. Fans want to watch the Proteas Women in the final without paying any subscription fee and Gayton seems to be the person to go to these days.

@helu_m wrote this on X (Twitter): “The Proteas Women are in the Final of the T20 World Cup. I make a request that it is shown on SABC and SS Variety 4 (209). Make this available for young kids to see and be inspired, and bring some joy to homes who might otherwise not be able to watch it.”

“Minister @GaytonMcKcan we please get SABC to cover the T20 World Cup Final on Sunday. The whole of SA needs to witness how special our ladies are and not only a select few. Let’s support our nation. All 50 million of us,” tweeted @LawrenceBailey0.

Can McKenzie make last-minute arrangements?
