Ex-Chiefs defender offers Zitha Kwinika guidance

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer has offered words of wisdom to struggling Amakhosi defender Zitha Kwinika.

Kwinika re-joined Chiefs ahead of the 2022/2023 season, arriving from Stellenbosch FC alongside attacking talent Ashley Du Preez. The duo joined the club under the stewardship of Arthur Zwane.

Over the past two seasons, the 30-year-old Kwinika has been a consistent presence in the Amakhosi starting line-up. However, the arrival of new coach Nasreddine Nabi has seen a shift in the team’s dynamics, and Kwinika has found himself on the fringes of the squad.

The experienced defender has yet to make a single appearance in the current Betway Premiership campaign, with stiff competition for places in the heart of the defence. New signings Rushwin Dortley and Inacio Miguel have formed a strong partnership, while Given Msimango has also contributed valuable minutes. Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, another defensive option, has only managed one substitute appearance.

Kannemeyer has advised Kwinika to remain patient and be prepared to seize any opportunity that comes his way. Kannemeyer emphasised the importance of being ready to play, as chances can arise unexpectedly in football.

“It’s very tricky for him at the moment; the new coach has brought in new defenders, and they are his regular starters,” Kannemeyer told FARPost.

“I think that on its own says a lot about his situation. Also he’s the only defender [centre-back] who is yet to feature this season.

“What he must bare in mind is, it doesn’t start with him, it’s just a phase. He needs to keep on working hard at training so that when he’s given an opportunity he’s ready to showcase his quality. The opportunity can present itself anytime.

“I would say to him, ‘Keep grounded, be patient, work hard and always be ready’. But at the end of the day competition is the only thing that makes us better in whatever we are doing.”
