Residents in parts of Sandton should brace for scheduled electricity interruptions this Sunday as Eskom embarks on critical maintenance of its distribution network. Also, the state-owned power utility confirmed that the planned outages are part of its continued efforts to stabilise the grid and improve infrastructure reliability.

The Sandton area will have a power outage on Sunday

On Sunday, 11 May, Eskom will interrupt power supply in Morningside, Sandown, and parts of Sandton from 6:00 to 23:00. The 17-hour power outage is required for technical teams to carry out upgrades and repairs on the distribution power lines.

“This interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance,” Eskom said in a notice, noting the importance of this work in sustaining service delivery.

Eskom also warned residents to treat all appliances as live throughout the outage period.

“In the interest of safety, customers are advised to treat all electrical appliances as live at all times,” the utility stated.

Dobsonville Outage Scheduled for Tuesday

A second planned power outage will affect residents of Dobsonville Extension 3 in Soweto on Tuesday, 13 May. Electricity will be unavailable from 9:00 to 23:00—another 14-hour disruption to facilitate similar maintenance on power lines in the area.

Furthermore, Eskom stressed that the maintenance work is part of broader efforts to enhance the quality and stability of supply across the region.

It also appreciated community cooperation, stating: “Eskom would like to thank you for your cooperation and apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused.”

Caution Urged and Plans May Shift

Additionally, while the utility has laid out the power outage schedule, it acknowledged the possibility of delays.

“Please note that should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated,” it cautioned.

As Eskom continues infrastructure upgrades amid a fragile national grid, affected households are encouraged to prepare accordingly and observe safety measures.
