Egyptian football was plunged into mourning on Tuesday as news broke of the untimely death of player Mohamed Shawky, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a league match.

The 26-year-old, who played for second-tier club Kafr El Sheikh SC in Egypt, collapsed on the pitch during an encounter against Kazazeen last week at the Zarqa Stadium.

According to multiple reports, the tragic incident occurred during the game when Shawky suddenly fell to the ground on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Medical personnel rushed to his aid, but their efforts to revive him on the field were unsuccessful.

He was subsequently transported to the Zarqa Central Hospital for further treatment, where he remained on life support for several days.

The Damietta Health Affairs Directorate reported that Shawky’s heart stopped while on a ventilator in intensive care. Despite the best efforts of the doctors and attempts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he tragically passed away at 4:00 AM on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
