The attempted murder and assault case against controversial businessman Edwin Sodi was struck off the roll by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 20 March.

In 2022, Edwin Sodi’s wife, Nthateng Lerata, dragged the business mogul to the courts, alleging that she and a male companion, Faizal Motlekar, were assaulted by the business mogul.

EDWIN SODI ATTEMPTED MURDER CASE DROPPED

Lerata has it that they faced a life-threatening encounter at the couple’s Bryanston residence. Rumour mill has it that during the confrontation, Sodi allegedly tried to shoot Lerata, but his gun jammed.

The public also heard that Edwin Sodi also allegedly used the gun to assault Motlekar on the head.

No doubt these allegations by Lerata saw an attempted murder and assault case being opened against Sodi.

However, the case was withdrawn after three years and over twenty court appearances. The media has since established that an out-of-court settlement was reached between the couple.

Despite the National Prosecuting Authority initially rejecting Lerata’s withdrawal statement due to the widespread scourge of Gender-Based Violence in the country, the case was struck off the roll.

“However, the court took into consideration that both complainants were absent in court and that one of them had filed a withdrawal statement. The second complainant indicated that he no longer wished to proceed with the case.

“Subsequently, the defence argued that the case be struck off the roll, which was granted by the court,” NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said.

Speaking to the media outside the courtroom, Edwin Sodi expressed relief that the case was finally resolved.

Speaking about his relief, Sodi said, ‘So it’s over. We can now focus on other things. It’s a relief, and I’m glad it’s over.’

He revealed that he has appeared before the courts 22 or 23 times in the past three years.

Edwin Sodi revealed that the ruling means ‘minus one problem.’ He even revealed that there were ‘nonsense allegations.’

OTHER COURT CASES

The tenderpreneur’s company, Blackhead Consulting, is at the centre of two controversial multi-million tenders.

The two tenders before the courts are the R255 million asbestos contract in the Free State and the R295 Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works.

Last year, the NPA revealed that Sodi’s properties worth over R300 million would only be forfeited to the state if Edwin Sodi is found guilty.

In 2024, the Bloemfontein High Court in Free State postponed his asbestos contract case to 15 April 2025.
