Twelve people were killed in a head-on collision between a minibus and a bakkie on the N2 outside Dutywa in the Eastern Cape on Saturday evening.
According to authorities, nine of the deceased were in the minibus.
Road and Transport spokesperson in the province Unathi Binqose said N2 road has been flagged as the most dangerous as a number of deadly collisions occured on the same road this festive season.

“The N2 is one of those roads that have been flagged as the most dangerous roads in the country, (particularly) that stretch between Khashi bridge and Umthatha,” she said.
“This is the second worst crash since the beginning of the festive season, another head-on collision that has claimed a total of eleven lives.”
“The MEC for transport Xolile Nqatha is sending his condolences to the families of the deceased and is making a desperate plea to you and I as road users to be extra cautious and patient with one another on the roads and avoid these head-on collisions that are claiming so many lives.”
Bonqose emphasizes that the N2’s frequent accidents are perplexing due to the absence of any obstructions that could potentially cause them.
“There’s a greater responsibility on drivers to be extra cautious and be patient with one another so we can avoid head-on collisions.”
Head-on collisions have been a major issue this festive season with already 500 deaths reported on the roads across the country so far.
