Denzel Washington’s Tony Awards snub for his powerhouse role in the Broadway revival of Othello has sparked widespread controversy and sharp criticism.

Despite the play’s record-breaking success, neither Denzel nor his co-star Jake Gyllenhaal received nominations at the 2025 Tony Awards. This left fans and industry insiders stunned.

DENZEL WASHINGTON’S TONY SNUB

Pauletta Washington, Denzel’s wife, did not hold back when asked about the snub.

Speaking candidly to reporters, the 74-year-old actress said, “Now see, that’s not something you want to ask me. I can’t say that I was surprised that they didn’t.”

She went on to explain that her family, which includes notable actors and directors like John David and Malcolm Washington, has faced similar disappointments before.

“In my family, we’ve been through this a lot of times. A lot of times. And I think I can speak honestly and truthfully and artistically that it was denied, you know, so you wonder why,” she said.

“But we don’t have to wonder why. Narrow-minded people make the decisions and judgments.”

The Broadway production, directed by Kenny Leon, shattered box office records by grossing an astonishing $2.8 million in a single week. It was the highest weekly revenue ever for a Broadway play.

Ticket prices soared to as much as $921 USD, roughly R15 000, which Pauletta suggested may have contributed to the snub, according to The New York Post.

“That’s the bottom line,” she remarked. “That’s a part of it. And you know that.”

Denzel, 70, lost out to nominees including George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim in the Best Leading Actor in a Play category.

DENZEL WASHINGTON AND GLADIATOR II

The snub comes on the heels of another major disappointment for Denzel this year, as he was also passed over for an Oscar nomination for Gladiator II.

Despite the setbacks, Denzel remains humble and focused on his craft.

He told the press, “I’ve been blessed beyond measure for a long time. I’m not bragging, but I’ve been a part of sold-out shows before.”

STAYING HUMBLE

Denzel Washington added, “God has blessed me with a great ability, and the reaction and response we’re getting humble me.

I feel humbled by the opportunity to share with a celebrity or to use my celebrity to help others. That’s what it’s about.”

This moment invites reflection on the inclusivity and fairness of awards that shape the careers of artists worldwide.
