DDC: Soweto derby called off as Sundowns extend winning run

The highly anticipated Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the DDC was called off while Mamelodi Sundowns extended their winning run.

WHY SOWETO DERBY WAS CALLED OFF

Amakhosi and the Buccaneers were set to face off in the final game of the DStv Diski Challenge festival on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, but it got delayed because of a thunderstorm.

The match was initially delayed by 30 minutes, then further postponed by an additional 15 minutes. However, as the adverse weather conditions persisted, the decision was made to cancel the match altogether.

Earlier in the day, Cape Town City FC and the in-form TS Galaxy played out to a 2-2 draw. In another match, Sekhukhune United secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Polokwane City. The KwaZulu-Natal derby between Golden Arrows and Richards Bay FC also ended in a 2-2 draw.

On Saturday, Masandawana extended their winning run to three matches after defeating SuperSport United with a 2-1 scoreline.

Thulani Zandamela was the hero of the day, scoring a brace to help Bafana Ba Style overturn a 1-0 deficit and secure the victory. The Pretoria-based side remains second in the league standings with 25 points from 11 matches.

Stellenbosch FC secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over AmaZulu FC at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Langelihle Phili scored a brace, and Faiz Abrahams added another goal for the Cape Winelands side.

With this victory, the Western Cape-based outfit retained its position at the top of the league table, having collected 26 points from 12 matches.
