Controversial pastor leaves SA amid ongoing legal storm

After years of courtroom battles, public protests, and national debate, Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso is at OR Tambo International Airport, preparing to leave South Africa, possibly for good.

This latest development takes a dramatic turn in a saga that has spanned nearly a decade. Omotoso’s presence at the airport comes just days after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed its plans to appeal a court decision that cleared him of multiple criminal charges.

A CONTROVERSIAL OMOTOSO ACQUITTAL

Omotoso, leader of the Jesus Dominion International Church, was acquitted in April by the Eastern Cape High Court. He had spent eight years in custody facing serious accusations, including human trafficking, sexual assault, and restricting the freedom of his congregants.

The verdict was met by widespread outrage from advocacy groups and members of the public, many of whom believed justice had not been served.

His co-accused, church officials Lusanda Solani and Zikiswa Sitho, were also acquitted. However, with Omotoso now set to depart, questions loom about whether the two women will be left behind to face possible renewed charges should the NPA’s appeal be successful, Sunday World reports.

Omotoso’s swift move to leave South Africa follows his recent arrest on immigration-related charges. On May 10, authorities attempted to deport him, leading to a brief appearance at the East London Magistrate’s Court. He was released shortly afterwards, triggering speculation that his departure was imminent.

Siya Qoza, the Department of Home Affairs spokesperson, told eNCA that Omotoso will not be allowed to come back to the country for five years.

“After the expiry of that period, he will have to apply for permission to be in the country. At that point, the department will look at the information and motivation provided to make a decision,” said Qoza, adding that the department does not comment on people’s travel arrangements but confirms traveling within the African continent.

SHOULD TIMOTHY OMOTOSO HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO LEAVE SOUTH AFRICA BEFORE THE NPA’S APPEAL PROCESS PLAYED OUT, OR HAS THE JUSTICE SYSTEM FAILED THE PUBLIC ONCE AGAIN?
