Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has praised the community of Extension 11, Diepsloot, for their assistance after an infant’s rescue from a pit latrine.
According to a statement issued by JMPD on 19 January 2025, they were called by a member of the public after the infant was found. The mother was also interviewed by police at the scene.
INFANT RESCUED FROM PIT LATRINE
The statement by JMPD states that the baby was found in a “ventilated improved pit latrine” on Saturday, 18 January. The law enforcement was directed by community members to the mother of the abandoned newborn.
JMPD said: “Upon arrival at the scene, the officers, together with the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), encountered a gathering of residents who directed them to a young woman, approximately 19 years old, suspected of discarding the newborn in the latrine.”
MOM OF INFANT RESCUED FROM PIT LATRINE ALLEGEDLY CONFESSED
The statement further reveals that the young mother of the child allegedly admitted to placing the baby in the pit latrine.
“The woman was interviewed by the officers. During the interview, the woman admitted to having placed the infant in the latrine,” the statement read.
The mother and her baby underwent medical evaluation at a local clinic. They were then transferred to Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital to receive further care. The incident is currently under investigation.
The community was praised by JMPD for promptly reporting the matter to the police. They further urged the public to do the same and be vigilant as their co-operation is crucial.
“We urge the public to continue to be vigilant and report any criminal activity or suspicious behaviour to the authorities. Community cooperation is crucial in combating crime and ensuring the safety of our residents.”
