Cold front expected to batter two provinces on Saturday

A powerful cold front tied to an upper air trough is expected to bring strong to near gale-force winds to parts of the Western and Northern Cape on Saturday. The South African Weather Service has forecast north-westerly to westerly winds of 40 to 60km/h, with gusts reaching between 65 and 100km/h. The most affected areas include the Hantam and Karoo Hoogland municipalities in the Northern Cape and the central and Little Karoo and eastern parts of the Cape Winelands.

These weather conditions are expected to persist from mid-morning until the evening and could cause significant disruption. Additionally, authorities have urged residents in these regions to take precautionary measures before the cold front.

Weather damage and disruptions anticipated

The anticipated strong winds could lead to “localised damage to settlements (formal and informal)” and pose challenges for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes. Additionally, transport services may be disrupted due to falling trees, dust storms, and road debris. Power and communication networks could also experience interruptions in some areas.

Furthermore, Cape Town residents have been urged to secure loose outdoor items such as furniture and to remain cautious during this severe weather.

“The public is urged to secure objects on their properties that could be carried by the wind,” authorities said, adding that particular attention should be paid to garage doors, sliding doors, and windows that may be vulnerable to wind damage.

Emergency services on alert

The City of Cape Town have encouraged the public to report any weather-related incidents or emergencies to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 021 480 7700. Motorists are also advised to exercise caution.

“When travelling, please be on the lookout for obstructions on the roadway like fallen trees or other debris,” the advisory added.

With winter weather intensifying and the risk of weather-related incidents rising, residents are urged to remain informed and prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.
