Tinkler guided the club to second, fourth, and fifth-place finishes in the league over the last three seasons, but this season the Mother City-based side find themselves down in 12th place in the 16-team Betway Premiership log after 10 matches.
The Citizens have won just three matches, drawn two and lost five to date.
They have struggled in front of goal, scoring six goals in those 10 fixtures.
‘Cape Town City and head coach Eric Tinkler have mutually agreed to part ways. The club expresses gratitude towards Eric for the last three seasons where he presided over 2nd, 4th and 5th place finishes. We wish Eric the very best for the future,’ a post on X read.
In a statement released to the media, the club expressed their gratitude to Tinkler and announced that a new interim coach would be named to replace him.
This was Tinkler’s second stint at Cape Town City.
During his first, he led the club to Telkom Knockout glory in 2016 after they beat SuperSport United 2-1 in the final of the competition.
Former Kaizer Chiefs star Lebogang Manyama and Diogo Peral are still part of Cape Town City’s technical team having served as Tinkler’s assistants.
Peral served as City’s caretaker coach following Jan Olde Riekerink’s departure in 2021.
Cape Town City will next be in league action in a home clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, 5 January at 17:45.
They then take on Orlando Pirates – also at home – on Wednesday, 8 January at 19:30.
Tinkler, now 54, earned 45 caps for Bafana Bafana between 1994 and 2002, scoring one goal.
He was part of the South Africa squad that won the 1996 African Cup of Nations, playing in the final.
