Chaos erupted at the Moses Kotane local municipality in the North West, as speaker Gugu Mtshali was forcefully removed from the council chambers.

The council held a special sitting on Tuesday, 22 October. The meeting was reportedly called by the municipal manager, Mokopane Letsoalo, and not Mtshali, who is, by law, authorised to call all council sittings.

NORTH WEST LOCAL MUNICIPALITY SPEAKER ESCORTED BY “BOUNCERS”

According to The Citizen, Mtshali was expected to call a meeting on Tuesday. However, she decided not to proceed after the African National Congress (ANC) Bojanala regional executive committee directed its caucus not to proceed with both sittings as they were unprocedural.

Videos of the incident have been widely circulated on social media platforms.

In the videos, Mtshali could be seen questioning councillors about the legality of the meeting as another councillor, Maria Mtshaba, was appointed acting speaker to chair the illegal meeting.

Mtshali can also be seen tearing apart documents and trying to intimidate Matshaba as she continues the meeting. The speaker was then escorted by security out of the council chambers.

The ANC in North West is yet to comment on the incident.
