Chaine can take over from Williams – ex-Bafana and Pirates star

Former Orlando Pirates keeper Moeneeb Josephs believes Sipho Chaine has what it takes to take over from Ronwen Williams at Bafana Bafana.

The 27-year-old keeper has been in fine form since he became first choice keeper for the Buccaneers last season. His form has earned him a Bafana Bafana cap two months ago.

Speaking to former Pirates star Lebohang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena on the Soccerbeat podcast, Josephs said Chaine has what it takes to fill in Ronwen Williams’ boots.

“Definitely Chaine (has what it takes to take over from Williams), but first I would like to give a big, big up to Ronwen, that’s the most consistent goalkeeper throughout the years and it’s not surprising to me that the boy is on the level that he is at,” Josephs said.

“Itu (Itumeleng Khune) and Brian (Baloyi) put us on the map of Africa. They made Africa realise that South Africa has good goalkeepers, but Ronwen has taken the baton and gone to another level.

“He has taken us to the world stage, deservingly so as well. He might not be a winner there at the (Ballon d’Or) but who gives a damn? He is a winner here with us, because of what he has done for the game,” says Josephs.

Chaine has already won five trophies with Pirates since joining the team in 2022. Under Jose Riveiro, former Chippa United keeper has become one of the best keepers in the league. The Buccaneers are in action next week against Richards Bay in a Betway Premiership clash.
