Kaizer Chiefs tasted defeat against their old mentor Gavin Hunt and SuperSport and it raises a few serious questions about their ambitions.
Chiefs banking on Carling Knockout success
Kaizer Chiefs won’t win the Betway Premiership season. Seemingly, all of their eggs are in the Carling Knockout basket. They’ve got a titanic test ahead of them in the quarter-finals against perennial South African champions Sundowns. However, if they can successfully summit that mountain, silverware could be on the cards for Nasreddine Nabi’s Glamour Boys.
Quarter-final ties look tasty
Kaizer Chiefs’ reward for thumping SuperSport 4-0 in the Carling Knockout is a quarter-final clash with the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns. This showdown takes place at FNB Stadium on Saturday 02 November at 18:00. Don’t miss it! Meanwhile, Richards Bay met Cape Town City earlier that day at the King Zwelithini. On Sunday 03 November, TS Galaxy hosts Orlando Pirates’ conquerers Magesi at Mbombela. Marumo Gallants meet holders Stellenbosch in the late game.
Potsane and Matlou return
In early October, Chiefs issued a statement that winger Tebogo Potsane and midfielder George Matlou would return to action in November. They’re on schedule according to an updated statement:
“Another player progressing well is George Matlou. He has started running and doing some ball work and we are looking at a November return for him.
“Tebogo Potsane went for a scan which showed some ligament damage [in his ankle], so we expect him to be out for around three weeks.”
Chiefs vs Sundowns H2H isn’t looking good, but…
Amakhosi’s recent results against the Brazilians don’t paint the prettiest picture. A controversial 2-1 win for Masandawana extended their unbeaten streak against Chiefs to nine matches across all competitions. You have to go back to April 2021 for Chiefs’ last win over Sundowns in any competition. Ironically, Uruguayan Gaston Sirino was a goal-scorer for Sundowns on that afternoon. Can he stick the knife into his former employers when the sides meet again? He’s returned from injury sooner than expected and got himself a goal against SuperSport which is a massive bonus for Nasreddine Nabi. The defeat to SuperSport in the league, however, was an unexpected setback.
