Due to the annual State of the Nation Address (Sona), Cape Town motorists have been advised to find alternative routes due to several road closures and restrictions.

The event will take place at the Cape Town City Hall on Thursday, 6 February.

CAPE TOWN ROADS AFFECTED BY SONA

The State of the Nation Address (SONA) is one of the most important speeches in the country. Once yearly, the president addresses the nation on vital issues – including social grants, unemployment, and the country’s future.

During the week following the SONA, a debate lasting approximately two days is held on the president’s address. On the third day, the president is given an opportunity to reply to the debate and to close it.

The City of Cape Town said road closures before, during, and after the event will affect the normal flow of traffic in and around the city bowl and the availability of parking spaces.

Signage will be installed in the affected areas; however, we urge motorists to please check the list of closures carefully and to plan their routes accordingly.

In addition, the municipality said motorists should:

  • Factor in additional time for travel over this period
  • Limit non-essential travel in the CBD area
  • Consult the various online navigation tools to find the best route to the your destination
  • Be patient, as traffic volumes will likely be elevated
