EMPD officials who illegally protested on Wednesday seem set to face the consequences amid increased criticism.

Striking Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department officers blocked off key roads during peak traffic in the metro, including the N17, R21 and the Gillooly’s Interchange.

Cape Town Mayor would have axed protesting EMPD officers

The protestors boycotted their duties without warning and caused significant disruptions in the metro.

Police failing to follow the correct protest procedures has drawn fierce criticism from Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

“In Cape Town every one of these officers would be fired, and the unions would attack us for doing so.” Hill-Lewis commented.

City confirms investigation into illegal protest is underway

Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirms the city was unaware of the protest. In line with this, investigations into the matter will determine what action will be taken against EMPD officers who participated.

Furthermore, a report has revealed that the severity of the matter extends past the officers boycotting their duties:

“We have actually started an investigation that does not only look at the abuse of council resources because those vehicles are council resources. It is also looking at officers who participated in that action when they were actually supposed to have been at work. We’re also looking at the issue of carrying firearms in the public protest.” Dlamini said.

EMPD officials demand overtime, increases

EMPD officers, in a memorandum of demands, claim key issues had been raised with the city years ago.

Demands include salary increases, danger pay and the reinstatement of overtime which has recently been limited.

“We, the officers of the EMPD, stand united in demanding fair compensation, just working conditions, and equitable treatment in line with constitutional labour rights. We dedicate our lives to serving and protecting the City of Ekurhuleni, and it is time that the leadership of this municipality reciprocates this commitment with fair and just policies.” EMPD Memorandum
