In response to a surge of holiday visitors, Cape Town has unveiled its largest-ever festive season safety operation.

Over 5,000 personnel, including police, emergency teams, and Project 1000 trainees, will enforce heightened safety measures across the city.

Enhanced Security Measures with Smart Technology

This year’s Cape Town festive season safety operation will include high-visibility policing at key attractions, including Table Mountain, beaches, shopping centres, and the city centre.

The operation will utilise cutting-edge technology, such as automatic number plate recognition, bodycams, dashcams, and drones to monitor public areas.

This tech-enhanced approach aims to deter crime and enable swift response, supported by Africa’s largest CCTV network.

Coordinated Citywide Safety Initiative

Cape Town’s Traffic Management Centre in Goodwood will serve as the hub of the Metropole Integrated Joint Operational Centre (JOC), coordinating with other JOCs and integrating with the SAPS Command Centre.

Officers will manage checkpoints on major routes, focusing on enforcing regulations around alcohol misuse and anti-social behaviour in public spaces.

“We encourage responsible enjoyment,” Smith said, highlighting alcohol’s role in public safety risks and the importance of Cape Town’s by-laws.

Drowning Prevention and Cleaning Campaign

Cape Town’s safety plan includes robust water safety measures. Over 600 lifeguards will be deployed at popular beaches and swimming pools as part of a dedicated drowning prevention campaign.

Additionally, the city’s ‘Spring Clean’ initiative will intensify efforts to maintain scenic routes, business districts, and beaches in pristine condition.

Cape Town’s anti-litter mascot, Bingo, will make appearances throughout the city, encouraging visitors and residents to keep public spaces clean.
