Learners across South Africa will begin their first school holiday on 28 March, marking the end of Term 1. Schools reopened on 15 January, starting a 200-day school year. The break allows pupils to rest before resuming classes for Term 2.
Families are expected to visit recreational areas, including beaches and swimming pools, with the summer season ending. Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has announced adjusted operating hours for community swimming pools to accommodate the school holiday period.
City urges residents to prioritise water safety
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, encouraged parents and guardians to remain vigilant when children are near water.
“It’s important for parents and guardians to always know the whereabouts of children and ensure that they are closely supervised, particularly around water bodies,” said Higham. She also highlighted the role of lifeguards in ensuring safety at pools and beaches.
The City has provided key water safety guidelines, urging residents to swim only at beaches with lifeguards on duty and between designated red and yellow flags. Other precautions include avoiding swimming under the influence of alcohol, supervising children at all times, and being aware of rip currents. Lifeguards are stationed at beaches daily from 10:00 to 18:00, though some locations may have reduced services.
Updated Swimming pool hours for the school holiday
Starting Monday, 31 March, community swimming pools will operate daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with the last ticket sold at 17:30. Residents are encouraged to check the City’s website or contact their nearest facility for the latest updates on pool operations.
With the school holiday approaching, families are expected to take advantage of public recreational spaces. Authorities continue to stress the importance of adhering to safety measures to ensure an enjoyable and accident-free holiday season.
