Kaizer Chiefs at a crossroads as the season winds down under the new technical team.
Chiefs’ struggles continue under head coach Nasreddine Nabi, with little improvement from last season. After suffering their 10th defeat of the campaign, the club teeters on the edge of repeating last year’s disastrous finish. If they lose two more matches, they will match their worst-ever season in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era.
The pressure mounts as Amakhosi risk finishing outside the top eight for the second consecutive season, something that has never happened in the club’s history. Their upcoming clash against TS Galaxy in Polokwane this Saturday could be a defining moment in their fight to stay in the top half of the table.
Is Nabi the right man for the job?
With Kaizer Chiefs’ performance failing to inspire confidence, questions arise about whether Nabi deserves another season. Former Amakhosi defender Mokete Tsotetsi weighed in on the debate.
“It’s a tricky one. Usually, Chiefs give coaches a chance. They will give you two seasons or more, so that you can settle. Yes, we are not happy with the results because they are still the same as last season. Nothing has changed. With the coach trying to settle and see how he will do things, I think giving him a second season would not be a bad idea,” Tsotetsi said, as quoted by Soccer Laduma.
Despite their league struggles, Chiefs still have a chance to salvage their season. They are in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, but standing in their way is Mamelodi Sundowns, a team that has already beaten them three times this season. The stakes couldn’t be higher as Sundowns chase a historic treble, including the Nedbank Cup, Betway Premiership, and CAF Champions League.
Winning could change everything
Tsotetsi believes that lifting the Nedbank Cup could provide much-needed motivation and relieve some of the mounting pressure.
“He might be able to see where the team went wrong and see where he can do things better. Winning the Nedbank Cup would certainly motivate the team and make things a little easier because it will ease some pressure. I think giving him another season will give him a chance to polish certain things.”
Verdict: Should Chiefs stick with Nabi?
Chiefs find themselves at a pivotal moment. A poor league finish could spell disaster, but a Nedbank Cup victory might be the silver lining that keeps Nabi in charge. With the club’s legacy at stake, the next few matches could determine not only his future but also the fate of one of South Africa’s most storied teams.
