South Africans are holding on to hope that Bonang Matheba will be Africa’s first person to host the Miss Universe pageant next weekend. And her gig at the Earthshot Awards ceremony was proof that she is on a world-class level.

The media personality co-hosted the awards ceremony – attended by Prince William – alongside actor Billy Porter.

Meanwhile, the pageant crowning takes place on 16 November at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City in Mexico.

BONANG TO HOST MISS UNIVERSE?

After co-hosting the Earthshot Awards, social media users called on Miss Universe organisers to rope in Bonang Matheba as host.

Bonang, who hosted the Miss SA finale in August, has previously been nominated by the public to head the biggest international beauty competition.

One tweep posted: “@MissUniverse, are you watching @Bonang on #EarthPrize2024?

This is the standard you should be on. She is thee host!”.

Another tweeted: “@Bonang needs no preparation. It’s a win for Miss Universe to get her on board… She’s a crowd puller, she’s legendary, she’s royalty. Book her!”

Sadly, it appears that Miss Universe has already announced its host – US media personality Mario Lopez.

They recently revealed on social media: “We’re excited to announce that @MarioLopez, a renowned figure in American television, will host our grand finale. With over 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry, his charm, commitment, and passion ensure a night to remember”.

MARGARET GARDINER TO RETURN TO COUNTRY SHE WAS CROWNED IN

Meanwhile, South Africa’s first crowned Miss Universe, Margate Gardiner, will return to Mexico, where she was crowned in 1978, this time as a judge.

The pageant said of the 65-year-old: “Her elegance, experience, and knowledge in the entertainment and beauty industry make her an iconic and respected figure in the world of international beauty. Her legacy inspires a new generation of women”.

Margaret Gardiner has been named as Miss Universe judge.
