It’s been a minute since we saw the raucous, wonderful scenes of Bloemfontein Celtics.
Likened to Borussia Dortmund’s ‘Yellow Wall,’ The Bishop Stand is arguably one of the most iconic sights in South African football. However, following the club’s financial crisis in 2021, it hasn’t been seen since.
The Free State outfit was snapped up by notorious businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, who relocated the club to Durban, leaving Siwelele fans troubled and without their hometown club.
Four years on, this tribulation could soon become elation following PSL’s recommendation to expel Royal AM. Their exile has yet to be set in stone, meaning the Celtic’s return to top-flight soccer remains speculation.
But, after years of disregard and meddling in the lower leagues, Bloemfontein Celtic’s return has never looked more likely. The Bishop Stand could be rocking again; and who wouldn’t love that?
Gayton McKenzie boosts Celtic claims
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed his desire to return the former PSL champions to the league, saying, “I had such an emotional encounter with Botha, the number one Siwelele supporter, I gave him my absolute word that Siwelele is coming back,
“I told him that I can vouch with my life for the people who are bringing Bloemfontein Celtic’s back to the Free State. Many tried and failed but this Group will not fail. Exciting times ahead,” McKenzie reaffirmed.
2020/21 was the last season Bloemfontein Celtics featured in, finishing eleventh with six wins, fourteen draws and ten defeats.
