There have been network issues leading to outages and interruptions in certain parts of South Africa recently. According to numerous well-known internet service providers, maintenance has been one of the leading causes.

Vox has revealed that there are also a few prolonged planned maintenances in certain areas by some ISPs. The South African reported on 18 November 2024 on Rain’s planned network upgrade for some of its 4G customers. Here are possible causes for network outages or interruptions in your area.

POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR NETWORK OUTAGES OR INTERRUPTIONS

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance is the leading cause for intermittent or prolonged network issues. It is however, one all internet users will have to put up with as it’s crucial for the proper functioning of these services.

Afrihost revealed on their network status page that Vuma Reach is currently conducting maintenance in Alexandra leading to little or no connection for users. The maintenance started on 25 November 2024 and is scheduled to be completed on 29 November at 14:00.

The Vox website states that there are national scheduled maintenances for their customers. These will start from 27 to 28 November 2024, causing little impact to connectivity. Most Vuma clients however, will experience prolonged planned maintenances in certain areas between 25 November 2024 and 13 December 2024.

MetroFibre will be doing most of their maintenance in December in areas such as north and south of Durban, Pretoria North and east, and more. However, there are currently maintenances in Gauteng ending 29 November.

All of these maintenances will mostly affect people in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape. The maintenance and outage statuses are regularly updated, so affected customers can check the status of their areas on the respective websites.

MAINTENANCES PUT ON HOLD DUE TO SAFETY REASONS

There are a few scheduled maintenances around the country that had to be put on hold due to safety reasons. Some of these incomplete maintenances are in Khayelitsha, Delft, Lotus River and Umlazi.

OUTAGES

According to MWeb, there are currently over 50 fibre outages in the country. Most of them are occurring in Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal, and were reported from 9 November 2024.
