‘Ask Chiefs and Pirates about us’ – Larsen warns Sundowns ahead of Carling KO final

Magesi FC head coach Clinton Larsen has sent a warning to Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the Carling Knockout Final.

Dikwena tsa Meetse faces Masandawana in their first final at the Free State Stadium on Saturday evening. The Brazilians are favourites to win the cup but Larsen has reminded everyone how his team got to the final.

Larsen defeated Orlando Pirates in the last 16 and is confident his side can repeat the same feat against Sundowns. Magesi drew 2-2 with Kaizer Chiefs in a league match a few weeks ago.

“We played Pirates and scored three goals before half-time, we played Kaizer Chiefs and we scored two goals before half-time. We can take confidence and say we’ve played the big guns and we really caused them problems as well,” Larsen said on Soccerbeat.

“It hasn’t just been one way street. These are the things we talking to the players about but in terms of motivating them, the message i’ve tried to get across to them is these are rare opportunities to play in a cup final. This is my first year of coaching and it’s only my second final and there’s many coaches who have not been to a final.”

Larsen looking to upset Sundowns

Masandawana have not won two finals in a row after going down to Pirates twice last season. Larsen says winning finals is not easy and many coaches and players have not had the privilege to lift a trophy.

I made an example to our players, assistant coach Papi Zothwane, one of the greatest midfielders to have played the game, has never played in a cup final.” he said.

Larsen has encouraged his players to enjoy the final as the underdogs and not fear Mamelodi Sundowns.
