Kaizer Chiefs eye starlet Asenele Velebayi on their quest back to the pinnacle.
Back and forth
AmaKhosi’s intention to sign the 21-year-old is one of the PSL’s worst-kept secrets – they had several offers rejected by Cape Town City during the offseason.
The wingers agent, Lance Davids, provided some insight on the longwinded exchange, saying, “So, of course, there was a lot of back and forth – Kaizer Chiefs put in an offer, and the value was too low for Cape Town Spurs,
“Chiefs came back with a second offer and gave, in my opinion, a valuation that was very fair with add-ons, and they also didn’t accept that. They thought the valuation was low, and then they stopped just there.
“In my opinion, I thought the valuation that Cape Town Spurs was looking at for Velebayi, compared to Oswin Appollis, it’s a no-brainer – you can’t compare [the two players’ value]. At this point, what did Oswin achieved in the last year?
“So I think the valuation of Velebayi was crazy; I think Chiefs, to be honest, was very fair on their proposal and, in my opinion, they could have still add some more add-ons.
“Of course, they did not because they thought they were also fair on their proposal, and the deal fell through… I’ll be honest, at first Cape Town Spurs wanted R12 million, they came down to R10 million, and Chiefs’ offer was R5 million plus players.”
Will Velebayi move to Kaizer Chiefs
While Velebayi’s move to Kaizer Chief isn’t confirmed, they will likely submit another bid for the Bafana Bafana prospect, who may be more eager to get the deal done following Cape Town’s dismal start to the season, sitting in thirteenth position, three points adrift from last place but 16 behind league leaders Orlando Pirates.
Following seven signings over the winter, Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi is still keen on bringing more players in this January as he tries to rebuild Kaizer Chiefs.
“I think we haven’t finished changing the squad, this is normal,” said Nabi.
“For all decisions, the direction of my eyes is for the best for Chiefs. It is not to be friendly, not to be emotional. For that reason, moving the squad won’t stop window after window.
“Maybe for a player not at our level there will be another opportunity, they will be out.
“People were pushing to see a striker before the last window (closed), but the opportunities were very bad.
“In October we don’t play many games, and then there is November and December, and after that (in January) a new window will open, and we will have the opportunity to scout the world for the best players.”
Do you think Kaizer Chiefs will land Velebayi?
