April Fool’s! Woolworths makes another Chuckles joke

Hot on the heels of Woolworth’s introducing a Chuckles beauty range to stores after initially labelling it an April Fool’s Day joke, the retailer has made another gag about the popular chocolate treat.

APRIL FOOL’S DAY! WOOLWORTH’S INTRODUCES ‘CRYPTOCURRENCY’

In a social media post, Woolworths attempted to pull the wool over the eys of their customers in an April Fool’s Day joke.

The retailer claimed that they would be introducing a new product, a chocolate-flavoured cryptocurrency called ChucklesCoin.

It read: “Woolworths Financial Services is proud to announce our entry into the world of cryptocurrency with ChucklesCoin.

“ChucklesCoin is the world’s first chocolate-backed cryptocurrency, and the latest step in our Good Business Journey. Together, we’ll build a future where sustainable farming, Chuckles chocolates, and blockchain technology (‘choc-chain technology’) join to make a difference.

“Stay tuned for more on the groundbreaking ChucklesCoin journey, as we shape the future of food and technology”.

Although Woolworths did not reveal it was an April Fool’s Day joke, their followers were quick to spot the gag.

CHUCKLES BEAUTY- FROM STUNT TO SHELVES

It’s not the first time Woolworths used their popular chocolate range in an April Fool’s Day joke.

In 2022, Woolworths teased a rotisserie chicken-flavoured Chuckles treat.

Last year, the company claimed that they would be introducing a Chuckles beauty and make-up range. Interestingly, customers begged Woolies to make it happen and by December, a Chuckles flavoured body butter, scrub and body wash were on shelves.

NOTHING WORTH JOKING ABOUT, SAY SOUTH AFRICANS

Meanwhile, South Africans on social media have shared their sombre posts about not having anything to joke about on 1 April.

With real-life issues like gender-based violence, crime, poverty and unemployment, and tense race relations, April Fool’s Day jokes were few and few between.

@_Hybreed_: “We gotta skip it this year because there’s no bigger joke than living in this economy.”

@BrentLindeque: “I feel like the last few years have been foolish enough. We don’t need ridiculous pranks.”

@MarkSham: “The problem with April Fools in South Africa is that almost anything sounds believable. This country is so wild that half the jokes feel like headlines from last week. Our reality is satire. The only prank left is good governance.”
