  • The ANC reshuffled its KwaZulu-Natal leadership, appointing Jeff Radebe as convener and reassigning former provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo to international relations.
  • The changes follow the party’s 2024 election defeat, with leaders urged to rebuild the ANC in the province.

The ANC has reshuffled its leadership in KwaZulu-Natal, with former provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo now serving as an ordinary member of the party’s executive.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced the changes on Tuesday, saying Mtolo will focus on policy, monitoring and evaluation.

Veteran ANC politician Jeff Radebe has been appointed as the provincial convener, with former MEC Weziwe Gcotyelwa Thusi as his deputy.

Former ANC provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma, who led the so-called Taliban faction, has been named the second deputy convener.

Mike Mabuyakhulu, will take on the role of coordinator, while former premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has been appointed as his deputy.

Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi, previously the deputy chairperson, is now in charge of fundraising for the ANC in KZN.

The shake-up follows a decision by the party’s National Working Committee after the ANC suffered a major defeat in the 2024 general elections on 29 May.

In a statement, the ANC said it was drawing on the legacy of KZN political icons such as John Langalibalele Dube, Moses Mabhida, Harry Gwala, and Griffiths Mxenge.

The ANC’s loss in KZN last year marked a dramatic shift from 2004, when it first took control of the province under Dr S’bu Ndebele’s leadership.

“As we embark on this critical phase, we urge the ANC in KZN to remain steadfast and focused on rebuilding the party in the province,” the statement said.
