President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed the slump in ANC voter support at the elections. Ramaphosa addressed the crowd at the 30th Annual Joe Slovo Commemoration in Soweto in Soweto on Monday.
Certainly, the ANC saw a steep decline in votes during the National Election, prompting a coalition government in a bid to retain power.
Ramaphosa calls for change in ANC
Ramaphosa noted the decline in support but rejected the notion that the ANC is in a terminal decline. Instead, the President called for party members to see the decline as motivation to change their ways.
“The outcome does not represent the terminal decline of the ANC. Nor does it represent the defeat of the national democratic revolution. However, the electoral outcome has sent a clear message to our comrades that we must act differently, that we must act decisively and with urgency to restore the confidence of the people of our country in the African National Congress.” President Cyril Ramaphosa
ANC commemorates struggle icon Joe Slovo
National spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri added to the address by doubling down on the ideals Slovo valued being of critical importance to the ANC’s success.
“The commemoration of Comrade Slovo’s life coincides with the 113th anniversary of the ANC, reminding us that renewal, discipline, and ideological clarity are central to our mission. His unwavering principles and revolutionary morality inspire us to confront the legacies of apartheid that continue to manifest as poverty, landlessness and social justice.” National spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri
Indeed, the ANC has doubled down on its insistence that change within the party is a work in progress.
“In this era of ANC renewal, we look to the example of Comrade Slovo to guide our movement’s rejuvenation. Renewal is not only about internal reorganization but a recommitment to serve our people with integrity, humility and results. His legacy challenges us to resist factionalism, fight corruption and place the interests of the people above all else.” National spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri
