With support from opposition parties, the ANC has removed Lindiwe Nhaca as its mayor from the chaotic KwaDukuza local municipality in Stanger, KZN.

The motion favouring her ouster succeeded on Thursday afternoon after the ANC Women’s League warned the party’s leadership not to axe her.

Nhaca, who had the full support of the Women’s League in the General Gizenga Mpanza region, was removed after the ANC accused her of causing divisions in the council.

The Women’s League had earlier said ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo should be removed from his post because he was against women leaders.

Nhaca used this argument to cling to power after the ANC called for her removal.

In September, her party membership was suspended.

A coalition of the ANC, the African Independent Congress, and the African Transformation Movement governs the KwaDukuza council.

It has struggled to operate effectively amid political infighting and divisions.

Despite mounting pressure, Nhaca’s refusal to resign sparked tensions at the municipal level and within the ANC.

This led the ANC to mobilise its councillors for a vote of no confidence against her.

DA Whip Privi Makhan said she was worried that the ANC faction, which supports the mayor, might cause protests and violence.

The DA’s motion to remove the speaker, Govidammal “Dolly” Govender, was unsuccessful.
