AmaZulu registers first win, Sekhukhune edge Richards Bay

AmaZulu FC registered their first win of the 2024/25 season on Tuesday evening after defeating Chippa United 2-0 in the Betway Premiership at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Hendrick Ekstein and Celimpilo Ngema scored two first-half goals for AmaZulu. Ekstein broke the deadlock in the 26th minute, whilst Ngema doubled the lead in the 35th minute. Abbubaker Mobara was shown a red card in the 94th minute.

AmaZulu’s poor start to the season saw Pablo Franco Martin sacked following three straight league defeats. Arthur Zwane and Vusimuzi Vilakazi took over as co-coaches, and in three matches, the duo lost two and won one.

The victory saw Usuthu move up to 15th on the log standings with three points after five outings. The KZN side has conceded 10 goals and racked up six goals.

On the other side, the defeat saw Chippa drop to fifth on the log table. The Chilli Boys have amassed 10 points in seven matches, following three wins, one draw and three defeats.

In another match played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening, Sekhukhune edged Richards Bay FC following a 2-0 victory. Siphesihle Mkhize scored in the 71st minute, whilst Yanela Mbuthuma was shown a red card in the 81st minute. Sipho Mbule scored his first Sekhukhune goal in the 90th minute.

The two sides were meeting for the second time in a space of nine days. In their previous meeting in the Carling Knockout Cup Last 16, Richards Bay claimed a narrow 1-0 victory at King Zwelithini Stadium.

The win eased some pressure on Babina Noko as they ended their two-match losing streak in all competitions. The Polokwane side climbed to third on the log with 10 points from five matches. Sekhukhune have registered three victories, one draw and one defeat.

As for Richards Bay, were left frustrated by the Sekhukhune defeat. The KZN side has gone five matches without a league victory following two draws and three defeats. They are number 13 on the log with five points.
