Coffee is a favourite kick-starter for most of us, we need it in the morning before the day starts, and in the mid-afternoons when we feel our bodies deteriorating from midday fatigue. It has now been confirmed that you can use coffee as an energy booster before working out.
The Cafekreme publication stated that coffee contains caffeine, a natural stimulant that blocks adenosine (a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation), increasing alertness, focus, and energy levels. It is claimed to boost physical performance by improving endurance, strength, and power output during exercise.
Additionally, the above source explains that coffee stimulates adrenaline release, causing the body to break down fat cells and release them into the bloodstream as free fatty acids, enhancing fat burning during exercise.
According to Healthline, research suggests drinking coffee 45-60 minutes before exercise to allow caffeine to be absorbed into the bloodstream. However, the publication states that the average gym-goer should consume the lower end of this recommended intake.
“During exercise, your body redirects blood toward active muscle groups and away from the digestive system, which slows digestion. For some, this can lead to stomach upset and digestive issues. Thus, some people may wish to exercise on an empty stomach.”
To personalise your caffeine strategy, Weaver’s Coffee & Tea suggests that you start with a low dose and gradually increase it as needed. It is also advised that you cycle your caffeine intake to avoid tolerance build-up.
The above source further suggests that you use coffee strategically for challenging workouts to maintain effectiveness. It is mentioned that balancing coffee with water is crucial, especially during exercise. Monitor your body’s response to dehydration symptoms, such as dark urine, dizziness, or fatigue, and adjust your intake accordingly.
