Air India plane crashes with 242 passengers on board

An Air India flight heading to London Gatwick Airport with 242 people on board has sadly crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India on Thursday, 12 June.

As reported by Reuters, airline officials, police and India’s health minister have confirmed that “many people” were killed on flight AI171.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was en route to Gatwick Airport in the UK when it went down in a civilian area near the airport just minutes after leaving the runway.

Of the 242 people on board, 217 were adults and 11 were children, a source told Reuters. Air India revealed that the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.

“The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals,” Air India posted on X, adding that details were still being gathered.

TV footage showed the plane flying low over a residential area before vanishing from view. Moments later, a massive fireball erupted behind a row of homes.
