In a letter to Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, AfriForum has demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the M23 rebel attack on a military base at Sake in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in which nine South African soldiers were killed.
Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are deployed in the DRC as part of the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) mission.
The attack on the military base at Sake began on Thursday morning.
The base is about 25km from Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province in the DRC, and during the attack soldiers offered strong resistance to try to prevent the rebel forces from advancing toward Goma.
