The country’s favourable climate, fertile soil, and also advanced agricultural practices have enabled it to achieve this remarkable production level. States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are major banana-growing regions, where both small-scale and commercial farming operations thrive. The diverse varieties of bananas grown in India cater to both domestic consumption and export markets.

Top 10 countries in Africa producing bananas

Markedly, competition in banana production is fierce on the African continent. 

Despite facing challenges such as poor infrastructure and limited access to modern technology, Nigeria continues to enhance its banana production capabilities and was the fourth largest producer worldwide this year.

The southern parts of Nigeria have ideal weather and soil conditions for growing bananas. These fruits play a crucial role in the diets of many Nigerians, providing essential nutrition to millions. Acknowledging the significance of bananas for food security, the Nigerian government has started programmes aimed at improving farming methods, fighting off diseases, and boosting production.

Ranked by production output, following are the top 10 producers of bananas in Africa:

Since President Joāo Lourenço launched the challenge of diversifying the Angolan economy through agriculture, bananas have become Angola’s green diamond for diversifying the economy.

Angola’s banana fair, a yearly event, brings together local farmers, associations, and also cooperatives from various municipalities. It also includes industry representatives from around the country, all coming together to talk about growing the market and showcasing their production strengths.

South Africa ranks 14th in terms of African banana producers. Markedly, most of the country’s bananas are grown in the Mpumalanga province.
