Former president Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto Wesizwe party continues to attract new followers in Gauteng, with Abel Tau and senior members of The Transformation Alliance joining it this week.

The party will brief the media at 11am on Thursday to welcome new members – including Tau, the leader of the TTA.

Tau will not be the only politician joining MK.

TTA’s former regional chairperson, Mpho Baloyi, former campaign logistics manager Nafded Banda, and many others are rumoured to be defecting to MK.

Tau was Tshwane’s acting mayor for a year after the ousting of Stevens Mokgalapa, who resigned following a sex scandal that ended his mayorship.

He was also a member of the mayoral committee for human settlements in Tshwane when he was with ActionSA.

In the past month, the MK party has attracted EFF members in Limpopo and registered dozens of supporters in Venda.

The party’s growing popularity outside of KwaZulu-Natal dispels the theory that it was a purely Zulu party with limited support outside the province.

The MK party took South Africa by storm when it won over 15% of the national vote in the May general elections and over 45% of the vote in KZN.

With 58 MPs, the party is now the official opposition in parliament.
