During a recent media briefing, Jacob Zuma, the leader of the Umkhonto Wesizwe party, expressed his deep concerns regarding the current political landscape.
Zuma asserted that the political system has become increasingly influenced by those with financial power, diminishing its representation of the general populace. He stated, “Those who win are those who have the money,” emphasising the alarming trend of corruption that has permeated democratic processes.

Zuma On Corruption Challenge
Zuma elaborated on the notion that modern politics has devolved into a corrupt enterprise, wherein individuals with substantial wealth wield undue influence.
“They pay people to elect so and so,” he remarked, emphasizing that political appointments often align more with financial interests rather than genuine public support. This shift, he contended, directly undermines the essence of true democracy.
Consultative Conferences: A New Direction
In light of these challenges, Zuma announced that the MK party will adopt a new strategy by foregoing traditional elective conferences in favour of consultative meetings.
These gatherings will focus on reviewing the party’s previous actions and identifying areas of improvement.

He explained, “We will meet, not conferences of elections, in what is called a consultative conference, where we will be consulting about our work and looking at whatever we’ve done, what are the shortcomings, etcetera, and then take decisions, what then is the next.” This approach aims to ensure that leaders are chosen based on merit rather than financial backing, ensuring a more equitable political landscape.
