The Department of Basic Education has released the 2025 school calendar, introducing a unique feature this year: an extra week-long holiday. All learners will begin the school year on 15 January, but a memorable additional holiday has been declared from 28 April to 2 May.

Additional school holiday week were introduced

According to BusinessTech, the extra week-long break aligns with Freedom Day on 27 April and includes Workers’ Day on 1 May, giving schools a well-timed respite between the second and third terms. This adjustment brings the total number of school days in 2025 to 200, spread across four terms.

The full term dates for 2025 are:

  • Term 1: 15 January to 28 March
  • Term 2: 8 April to 27 June
  • Term 3: 22 July to 3 October
  • Term 4: 13 October to 10 December

The calendar also accounts for 27 school holiday days and six public holidays.

Focus on school readiness in Mpumalanga

In preparation for the new school year, Mpumalanga Education MEC Cathy Dlamini launched the Back-to-School Campaign at Phatfwa Secondary School in Mbonisweni. This initiative aims to ensure readiness among School Governing Bodies (SGBs), parents, and school management teams, as reported by SABC.

Speaking at the event, Dlamini stressed the need for smooth preparations: “The purpose of the launch of the Back-to-School Campaign is to encourage all SGBs in the province, parents, and our school management team to start preparing for the opening of the schools. We want to make sure that by the first day, learners are starting to learn and not dealing with delays.”

Schools in Mpumalanga, like others nationwide, will reopen on 15 January, marking the start of Term 1.
